They will feature songs about justice, freedom, human rights and peace, some serious and some humorous. Many pieces will be performed a cappela with 4-part harmony, others will include piano or guitar accompaniment. A reception will follow immediately in the Opera house lobby.

Calliope Feminist Choir will be performing April 10that 4 p.m. at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville. Calliope is an all-women singing group based in Athens. The women are united by their belief in the principles of feminism and love of women‘s voices. It is these beliefs that lead them to perform music that honors and promotes justice, peace, equality, and right relationship with earth. Calliope celebrates women’s culture by choosing songs of beauty and spirit composed and arranged primarily by women.

Since its inception in Athens, Ohio in 1993, Calliope has grown to more than thirty members. Calliope is a member of the International Sister Singer Network, an organization composed of women’s choirs throughout America and Canada. As a result of the Choir’s participation in the 8th International Choral Festival of the Sister Singers’ Network in 2001, in Grand Rapids Michigan, Calliope members grew determined to sustain and develop their talents and repertoire.

Calliope performs at several community events throughout the year, introducing music not usually heard in our area. This will be the third full length concert. Some of the musicians to be featured this year are Patsy Cline, Ronnie Gilbert, Joan Szymko, Ysaye Barnwell and Holly Near.
